Whale Rider was one of the truly great films from 2003. From start to finish, this film grabbed me in a way that few do. The opening scene of a movie is critical and Whale Rider has one of the best written opening scenes I have seen in a long time. It has so much subtext beyond the actual events that are happening, that even though you don't completely understand some of the conflicts, you are pulled right in to the world and don't want to leave. The performance by Keisha Castle-Hughes is astonishing for any actor, let alone a first timer and Rawiri Paratene, as the head of the tribe, holds the whole movie together. This is a film that should not be missed.
