The
Virgin Suicides is one of those rare movies that is able to
perfectly capture a time and place. In this case it is a Detroit
suburb (although it really could be any suburb) during the 1970's.
The story reminds me of the way a haunted house story is told
by someone who was there, but who has no explanation for what
he has experienced. The movie is so unique it is hard for me
to really describe appropriately. In the simplest terms it is
about five girls, with very strict parents, that would rather
die than not be able to experience life like the rest of the
kids around them, but this description doesn't come close to
capturing the beauty and grace of the film. Also for a first
film on no budget, Sophia Coppola got one hell of a cast for
this flick. (Kirstin Dunst, James Woods, Kathleen Turner, Josh
Harnett to name a few) |
