Watching
the Treasure Sierra Madre it is an absolute wonder that an "A"
list picture like this ever got made in the studio system of
the mid 1940's. The main character Dobbs (Humphrey Bogart) is
about as unlikable as a character can get. He lies, cheats,
and steals (and attempts to kill) and the rest of the characters
are only a little bit more likable than him. The film's frank
portrayal of greed and its consequences has more in common with
European films of the day like The Bicycle Thief than the typical
Hollywood fare of the time. Please don't let the above keep
you away from watching, as it is one of the truly great American
films of all time and should not be missed.
