This
Sporting Life was the first film in the "Angry Young Man
genre" of British cinema that developed in the 1960's. It
definitely has a rawness that was rarely scene in British cinema
before it. This Sporting Life is about Frank Machin (Richard Harris
in his breakout performance) and his move from miner to rugby
star. If it sounds like it is going to be a typical "Hollywood"
sports film, you could not be farther from the truth. Frank is
a brutal man who just wants to be loved by the one woman in his
life that really wants nothing to do with him. I really liked
the structure of this film as it moved in and out of flashbacks,
and if you only know Richard Harris as Dumbledore in the first
two Harry Potter films you are in for a special treat.
