Thirteen
is both an exhilarating and scary look at the lives of a couple
of 7th grade girls. Tracy (Evan Rachel Wood) is the "good"
girl who befriends Evie (Nikki Reed) in a quest to become more
popular and is soon caught up in a wave of petty crime, drugs,
sex and body piercings. What makes this movie interesting is that
even if you have seen pieces of this story in other films, made
for TV movies or after school specials it has such immediacy that
it completely draws you in. What you find is something you hope
your kids will have will never have to go through. Every performance
from this ensemble cast is note perfect. From the leads to more
peripheral characters like the brother and the mom's boyfriend,
every actor really puts themselves out there. Special note should
be made for Holly Hunter. She plays a mom who just doesn't know
what to do with her daughter. She knows she is stuck either way.
You won't come away from this film thinking the world is a pleasant
place, but you will have learned a few things.
