This is a quintessential foreign film, that is a must see. You don't get any more Scandinavian than a guy playing a chess match against death for his own life. The questions the main characters ask about God and the universe (it has some heavy subject matter but it is still very entertaining) couldn't make it into a American film nowadays let alone in 1957.
