Seabiscuit
holds with many of the traditions of a typical sports movie, but
luckily knows when to steer clear of the big clichés. Some
of the things this horse did are so amazing that if they were
not true you would not even consider writing them into a story.
It would be too far fetched. Where this movie most succeeds is
with its three main characters. Jeff Bridges plays the owner Charles
Howard, Chris Cooper plays the trainer Tom Smith and Tobey Maquire
plays the jockey Red Pollard. Each man has his own demons he is
trying to overcome and Seabiscuit is the one thing that allows
all three of them to get back something they have lost. The other
huge strength of this movie is how well it sets you into the time
of the Depression and how much Seabiscuit meant to the country
in its time of need. Is the movie sometimes maybe a little too
sentimental, sure, but in the end I was more moved by this movie
than I ever would have expected going in it.
