Optimism as a heroic act. It is an interesting concept and the
basis of the main character Lloyd (John Cusack) in Cameron Crowe's
directorial debut Say Anything. Until the release of this DVD,
I had never actually seen this whole movie. This is a disgusting
thought when you compare it to the many high school movies that
I have seen that were absolute garbage. This one gets it right
and does it in a unique way.
The
audio and video transfers on this DVD are both very good. They
are about what you would expect from a movie of it stature.
This
DVD contains a pretty solid set of supplemental material. Most
noteworthy is the commentary with Cameron Crowe, John Cusack
and Ione Skye. The commentary actually runs for twenty minutes
before the movie starts. Everyone has a lot to say and the 100
minutes the movie offered obviously was not going to be enough.
Each person gives some great background and insights into their
parts of the film. You can also tell how much each of these
people enjoyed making this movie and how it was pivotal in each
of their careers.
There
is a fairly extensive set of deleted and alternate scenes, but
you can see why much of it was left on the cutting room floor,
as it did not add a lot to the story and only slightly to the
characters. A standard featurette, along with various theatrical
trailers and TV spots round out the package. I am impressed
that Paramount put some money behind getting this disc produced.
