Wow, what a great year for Jamie Foxx. First he goes toe to toe with Tom Cruise in Collateral and then blows everything out of the water with his performance in Ray. Like Charlize Theron’s performance last year in Monster, Jamie Foxx is Ray Charles in this film. You never doubt him for a second, he is that good. The fact the Foxx is a trained concert pianist adds so much believability to the performance that I can’t imagine there is anyone else who could have come close to what he does here.

As far as the film goes Ray is nothing out of the ordinary for a biopic, but it does everything well, which is all you can ask for. The scene where we see Ray as a kid learning how to “see” with his ears is one of the best directed scenes in any movie this year. Visual story telling at it finest.
