Enough
has been written on this film that I do not think it is really
necessary for me to write a full review. I will say that I think
it is one of the most important films in the last 20 years for
many reasons, not the least of which is the film's nonlinear structure
and the amazing dialogue (I could go on and on).
Pulp
Fiction had been released on DVD quite a few years ago in a
non-anamorphic, non-special edition version. It is nice to finally
see it get the full special edition treatment (although this
DVD is very similar to the Criterion Laserdisc). The new transfer
is absolutely gorgeous. Colors are perfectly reproduced and
the blacks are nice and deep. Until a high definition version
comes out you will not see Pulp Fiction look an better than
it does here. Both the DTS and Dolby Digital soundtracks are
right where they need to be. Pulp Fiction never had sound effects
flying all around your head but when the music kicks in you
feel it.
I
kind of knew that since the Criterion Laserdisc did not have
a commentary that this DVD would not have one either. It is
still a disappointment that Quentin didn't record one. In a
way it does make since there are so many theories out there
about what different scenes in the movie mean, there is little
reason for Quentin to get into a whole lot of detail. The various
documentaries along with the included articles and Charlie Rose
interview help bridge the gap. If you have not seen it before,
make sure you watch the American Theatrical Trailer. Definitely
one of the best (funniest) trailers you will ever see. (The
Merchant-Ivory music that starts it is classic)
If
you truly love movies this is a must own DVD and if for some
reason you saw the movie and did not like it, I think you need
to go back for a second helping. (One nice bonus for those of
you who own the original DVD version is that included in the
package is a $5 mail in rebate.)
