I
am still not sure if I understand the ending and what it means
for the rest of the movie, but everything that comes before
it is epic film making at its best. Sergio Leone is one of those
rare filmmakers that within seeing a couple of shots you can
tell it is a Sergio Leone film. Once Upon a Time In America
is no exception. The film tells the story of a group of kids
growing up in New York in the 1920's. They pull off a bunch
of petty crimes and slowly develop a nice little crew. As prohibition
is declared, the era of the bootlegger begins and they are soon
a very rich crew. (This description only tells the beginning
of the story and I don't want to give away anything else.)
At
just under 4 hours it is a very detailed and rich story. Robert
DeNiro and James Woods give great performances as the two leads
and they are surrounded by a wonderful supporting cast which
includes Joe Pesci and a very young Jennifer Connely.
