David
Lynch's Mulholland Dr. may be one of the most difficult films
I have ever seen to figure out exactly what is real and what
is actually going on. You get to certain point where you think
you have it all figured out and Lynch pulls the rug out from
under you. I have a feeling it will take another 3 or 4 viewing
to really develop a solid theory. One of Lynch's obsessions
is obviously dream imagery and logic (Twin Peaks, Lost Highway,
etc.) and here he pushes each to its limits. I can honestly
say that right now I don't understand the movie, but I still
love it and think it is one of the most unique and interesting
films I have seen in quite a few years. Although the total film
doesn't seem to make sense, every scene in it plays well on
its own, so the film never fails to hold your attention. Any
explanation of the actual plot would pointless, so my suggestion
is to either rent it or buy it and see if you can figure it
out.
Video
quality on this disc is outstanding. There are a variety of
dark scenes which are reproduced wonderfully. It isn't quite
a reference disc, but there shouldn't be any complaints. David
Lynch films are known for his detailed sound designs and Mulholland
Dr. lives up to this expectation. Great use of all speakers
really puts you in the middle of this dream world. Extras are
basically non-existent. We get a trailer and some cast bios,
but that is it. Another unique aspect of this disc is that it
does not contain chapter stops or a scene selection menu. This
is one film where that may be completely appropriate.
