Mona
Lisa owes much to Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver, but that isn't
something that should be held against it, as it is an exceptional
film on its own. Bob Hoskins plays George, a small time hood, who
has recently been released from prison. The outside world is completely
foreign to him and his first new job is to drive Simone, (Cathy
Tyson) a black, high class hooker to her appointments. George looks
down on her as a lowly whore, but in reality she is much more sophisticated
than him and she is in charge. At first this does not sit well with
George, but since he has no choice, we see the development of a
very unique relationship, which becomes more and more complicated
as he becomes more and more obsessed. The movie is full of interesting
characters and seedy London locations which make for a very interesting
film. The
video and audio quality on this DVD is fairly average. The picture
looks clean enough but there are definitely a few sections where
the picture is a little soft. Sound is mono so you cannot expect
a whole lot.
The
commentary on this disc is actually from two separate recording
sessions. One with Bob Hoskins and the other with Neil Jordan.
I am not a big fan of these type of compilations. I am sure there
were some type of scheduling issues, but it is so much more interesting
when a director and actor are able to record a commentary together.
That being said the commentary does have some good insights and
information from both people.
