Misery
like Stand By Me and Shawshank Redemption are the types of Stephen
King stories that work really well on screen because there are
no supernatural elements in the them. Paul Sheldon (James Caan)
is a writer of a series of extremely popular romance novels
featuring a character named Misery Chastane. He is in Colorado
finishing up his latest novel (His first break from the Misery
series in a long time) when he is in a car wreck in the middle
of snow storm. He is pulled from the wreck by Annie Wilkes (Kathy
Bates), who happens to be a nurse and is also Paul Sheldon's
self proclaimed "No. 1 Fan". This seems to be a lucky
break for Paul as his injuries are quite extensive and the road
to the nearest hospital is covered in snow. Over the next few
days we learn he is not as lucky as we first thought. Kathy
Bates won an Oscar for her performance in this film and it is
well deserved. William Goldman's script is tight and filled
with some great tense moments that director Rob Reiner pulls
off with style.
