Martin
Scorsese had directed a couple of films before Mean Streets, but
this is the one that started the revolution that would become
his film career. John Cassevettes had been the instigator for
this style of acting and story, but the visual style was put together
in a way that no one had seen before. The use of slow motion and
music were very unique for its time. Elements of everything Scorsese
would do in Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas are all here,
which makes this movie all the more important. Great performances
from Harvey Keitel and Robert DeNiro lead the stellar cast. If
you are a film buff and have not seen this movie shame on you,
and if you only know Scorsese from Goodfellas or Gangs of New
York, it is time to go back and see where it all started.
