The Last Samurai is a strange film for me to review. I enjoyed it even though I was occasionally rolling my eyes during the film. In many ways this is Dances With Wolves set in Japan, but in my opinion it still works. The story although predictable is interesting and adds its own little details to the formula. The visuals are very nice, the choreography and battle scenes are well done and there are a variety of very good performances in the film. (Tom Cruise included)

I do laugh at how films like these are often criticized for taking a world and viewing it through the "white mans" eyes. What else is Hollywood going to do? If I want to see a samurai movie from a Japanese perspective I can watch any of the great Akira Kurosawa samurai films and get that perspective. As long as Hollywood treats the world they are exploring with a little bit of respect then they have done their job. The Last Samurai does that and more.
