An
American version of this Swedish film will be out this summer and
it will be interesting to see if director Chris Nolan (Memento)
will be able to stick with the characters the same way and not just
turn it into another plot driven cat and mouse chase. In
this version of the film, Stellan Skarsgard (Ronin), plays Swedish
detective Jonas Engstrom, who has traveled with his partner to
a remote northern Norway town to investigate the brutal murder
of a teenage girl. (Eerily shown under the opening credits) He
catches an early break when some kids find the girls backpack.
He sets up a sting by going on television and hopes the killer
will attempt to retrieve the backup. There are complications when
the killer arrives and during a chase along the fog covered seaside
Jonas accidentally shoots his partner. Jonas immediately starts
to cover up his mistake by blaming the shooting on the killer.
The problem he will soon learn is that the killer witnessed the
shooting and is not going to go down without a fight.
The
rest of film beautifully combines the police procedural, the psychological
thriller and a deep character study. With the simple decision
to cover up his mistake, Jonas has turned himself in to everything
he hates. Slowly all of the pieces start to collide and conclude
on a great, wide open ending.
Video
quality on the DVD is pretty solid. The film is shot mostly with
natural light using a muted color scheme, and it is solidly reproduced.
Sound is in simple stereo but it does what is needed for the film.
This
is actually a fairly bare bones Criterion DVD. Only a trailer
and a TV spot are included.
