If
the content of movies were any indication of the society they
came from, Japan would be one of the scariest places in the
world to live. In Ichi the Killer, director Takashi Miike is
given total freedom to do whatever he wants. Miike takes that
freedom and gives us one of the most violently graphic movies
I can ever recall seeing. Based on a Japanese Comic (or manga)
the film follows yakuza member Kakihara and Ichi. Kakihara is
trying to find his boss who has disappeared and Ichi, as the
title says, is a killer. The thing is that Ichi doesn't just
kill someone he shreds them. Obviously this movie is not for
everyone. What is odd about the movie is at a little over two
hours it almost feels too short. It seems like we are just scraping
at the surface of the characters. An extra half an hour might
have added just enough to move the film to that next level.
