FILM
I have always been a fan of the James Bond films and I might as well start off by saying this is one of my all time favorites. I can take or leave Roger Moores performances in the various films he worked in, but in my opinion he hit every note perfect in this film. When he needed to be cheeky he played it without going over the top and when the script called for strict vengeance he was up to the task. Oddly enough, this is the most Connery like performance he ever gave, which is probably why it works so well. What made Connerys Bond great was his willingness to use his license to kill with a certain amount of brutality. You knew the man wasnt f--king around. It didnt matter if you were a man or a woman, if you crossed that line you were dead.

For Your Eyes Only has all the components of the great Bond films. We start of with references to the past with Bond visiting his wifes grave, after which Bonds old arch enemy Bloefeld (along with his cat) makes one final attempt to kill Mr. Bond. As usual it does not work out and Bond gets rid of Bloefeld once and for all in a highly entertaining sequence. After a nice naked lady filled credit sequence, we see a top secret vessel sink with a missile decoding device that the Russians would love to get their hands on.

A scientist and his wife are killed while searching for the device and their daughter, the absolutely gorgeous Carole Bouquet, makes vengeance against her parent's killers, her life mission. Carole is one of the truly great Bond woman. She is gorgeous, as most of the Bond woman usually are, but she has a icy determination we usually only see in Bond himself. From this point we get a slew of great characters. From Lynn-Holly Johnson as the absolutely hilarious Bibi Doll to Topal, as the suave Greek trader, Columbo. All of actors are cast perfectly and extremely entertaining.

This film contains one great action set piece after another. The car chase with Bouquet and Moore in a small 2CV is one of the funniest chases in any Bond film. The ski and motorcycle chase is absolutely top notch and the shootout at the ship yard leads to the most important scene in the movie (we also find out from the commentary that this was one of the most discussed scenes). One of the villains (who had killed a colleague of Bonds earlier in the film) is trying to escape in his Mercedes when Bond causes him to lose control of his car. The car ends up hanging over the edge of a cliff. In the typical Roger Moore Bond flick he probably would have thrown out some cheesy line as the car accidentally slipped over the edge. Not in For Your Eyes Only. Instead Bond tosses a pin the killer had left on the colleagues body into the car, and kicks the car off the cliff himself. The car tumbles down the embankment and the body falls out at the bottom. This is the type of vengeance we rarely saw from Moore, which is why I think most people do not like a lot of his Bond films. The film then ends with an amazing assault on a cliff top fortress.

With the exception of the scene in the ice rink with the hockey players (why this scene is in the movie, I do not know) this is a perfect Bond film.

VIDEO
Video on this disc is outstanding. Practically no digital artifacts and most important it is a new transfer that is Enhanced for Widescreen TVs. I wish MGM (along with every other studio) would stay consistent and make all of their DVDs Enhanced for Widescreen TVs. Colors are all outstanding and grain is kept to a minimum. Any flaws in the picture are more likely related to the source print.

AUDIO
For this DVD we get a new 5.1 Dolby Digital remix. Sound is excellent. Good low bass and active surrounds, which often times are missing from remixes.

EXTRAS
These are the types of extras all special editions should include. First we have simple, but beautiful animated menus. Second, and often times the most interesting aspect of any special edition, is a 40-minute documentary on the making of the film with many of the main players both in front of and behind the camera. This disc also comes with two commentaries (I must admit I have only got around to one of them so far). The one I listened to was with director, John Glenn and a narrator who gives other production notes. I wish all commentaries were as entertaining and informative as this one. We get details about all of the actors and locations, along with many insights into John Glen's first directing assignment.

SUMMARY
If you are a James Bond or action movie fan this disc is a must have. All the elements of the classic Bond films come together in this movie. Besides that, you won't find many other DVD's with this many extras on it. The 8+ hours it would take to go through everything on this disc, easily justifies the special editions list price of $34.99. It is worth every cent of your entertainment dollar.
