SUMMARY
If you are a fan of the 50's melodramas by Douglas Sirk (All That Heaven Allows, Imitation of Life, etc.) then you are going to love this film. If not, then it is probably a 50/50 chance whether or not you will like it. What writer/director Todd Haynes is going for here is a movie set in the 50's that feels, looks and sounds like it was made during the 50's, but with some of the kids gloves taken off. As both an homage and a film in itself it succeeds wonderfully, but it definitely not going to be a film for everyone. The performances of Juilanne Moore, Dennis Quaid and Dennis Haybert alone are enough to recommend that you at least rent this DVD, but don't say that I didn't warn you.
