SUMMARY
Right from the start I need to let you know that in my opinion this is the greatest comedy ever put on film. This is a masterpiece on every level. I think what is significant about this film is that it was making fun of the threat of nuclear war at the absolute height of the cold war. 1963 is a time that Americans in general would have been most worried about nuclear war and Stanley Kubrick is making a comedy where in the end the whole world is destroyed. (I am not giving away anything if you have never seen the film) I will admit the first time I saw the movie I missed about 60% of the jokes. The film was not exactly what I expected which lessened my concentration. All it took was a second time and I was a convert in the opinion that this is the greatest comedy ever made. My suggestion is to watch for every visual joke because there are a ton of them, and to the wonderful performances by Sterling Hayden (the fluoridation scene is the key) and George C. Scott.

In the past I have watched this film in its full screen and multi-aspect ratio versions. This time around I watched it on my widescreen TV and decided to blow it up to fill the screen. (I do the same thing when I watch Eyes Wide Shut) I personally like this format. I am pretty sure this film would have originally been shown in the theaters at the 1.85:1 aspect ratio so I am just simulating that original presentation ratio. The video quality on this disc is actually quite good. The blacks in the film are extremely deep and digital artifacts are kept to a bare minimum. Much better than I expected. The audio although mono is solid all around. No real extras.
