If
you read my review for Foxy Brown you know that I gave it 3
stars and thoroughly enjoyed that film. I gave the same rating
to Coffy and in a way that is an injustice to Coffy. It is a
better film than Foxy Brown, but it does not quite get to my
3 and 1/2 star criteria. If we go to school type grading, Foxy
Brown was a B- and Coffy is a B+. This film has all the great
elements of classic exploitation cinema (nudity, violence, etc.)
and as usual Pam Grier does a great job. That being said Coffy
has more to say than it genre would normally allow. Jack Hill
was one of the great writer/directors at being able throw socially
relevant issues into the confines of the exploitation genre
constraints. You can pick this disc up for about $10 so your
risk is minimal and if you give it a chance I think you will
love it.
(P.S.
Quentin Tarantino loves this film so much he included it in
his top ten for Sight and Sound magazines recent top films ever
poll)
The
transfer for this DVD, although non-anamorphic, is good. The
dingy colors of the 70's are nicely reproduced and there are
a minimal amount of artifacts, although they do creep into a
few scenes. Sound quality is again what you would expect from
a mono source.
As
with Foxy Brown the Jack Hill commentary makes this a great
bargain. |
