Brute Force is and early film directed by Jules Dassin who would later direct the classic film noirs Night and the City and Rififi.

This film has a certain stark realism to it but it also has that hovering "hand of doom" feeling so many noirs contain. Hume Cronyn is outstanding as the brutal prison guard named Munsey. Cronyn whom you may recognize from the movie Cocoon didn't get to play this type of part very often and he takes full advantage of his opportunity.

Brute Force is a great film noir/prison film and well worth your time.
