SUMMARY
Watching this film recently on DVD I was even more impressed then when I saw it in the theater. This isn't Martin Scorsese's best film, but it takes us into a world in a way that no other director can do. Nicholas Cage plays Frank Pierce an EMT who is trying to save the world. Much of this film reminded me of Sam Fuller's masterpiece Shock Corridor. Similar to the protagonist in that film, Pierce has submerged himself into an insane world and is slowly going insane himself. He needs the rush he gets from saving a life and that rush keeps him coming back. Each character he interacts has their own way of dealing with the insanity and each is looking for redemption in their own way. This movie is about Pierce's search for his redemption. Great performances from Cage, Ving Rhames, Tom Sizemore, John Goodman and Patricia Arquette.

Video quality on this disc is top of the line. Almost every scene in this film is at night and many are on the streets of New York. The blacks in the transfer are extremely deep making this one of the better transfers I have seen recently. For as dark as the film is, I saw practically no digital artifacts. Audio quality is solid. As usual Scorsese puts together an extremely detailed sound design that puts us right in the middle of the action. Extras are slim. The ten minute featurette is interesting but nothing unusual.
