Jean-Luc
Godard is one of the true originals in cinema history and the
true revolutionary in the French New Wave. With each of his
films in the 1960's he tried to completely turn what the moviegoer
expected on its head. He knew how the rules had been established
and new exactly how he wanted to break them. In Band of Outsiders
my favorite example of this occurs about 10-15 minutes into
the film. The narrator runs through a series of one-liners to
quickly summarize the plot to that point in the film for all
the people who strolled into the theater a little late. That
detachment is great example of what made him so unique, but
is also the kind of thing that many people couldn't stand about
him. Rent Breathless, Alphaville and Band of Outsiders and you
can make up your own mind.
