Almost Famous is one of those rare rock and roll movies that actually feels right. The concert scenes alone actually feel like real concerts that I have been to before, which is something I have rarely experienced in a film. William Miller (Patrick Fugit) is a 15 year old writing an article for Rolling Stone magazine while on the road with a band named Stillwater. The story is based on writer/director Cameron Crowe's own experiences on the road with some of the great rock and roll bands of the 1970's, so all the details are right. The movie is filled with great characters and great performances including Billy Crudup as Stillwater guitarist Russell Hammond, Frances McDormand as William's mother and Philip Seymour Hoffman as real life rock journalist Russell Bangs, but none that stand out like Kate Hudson as the groupie (excuse me, Band Aid) Penny Lane. Hers is a career making performance.

As you can see from the special features section this 3 disc set contains both a director's cut and the original theatrical version of the film. Both are outstanding, but the director's cut adds a lot of great character details which really make it worth seeing.
